The Property Sector Research Centre (PSRC), launched in March 2023 during the PPRA NRF Conference, was established by the Property Practitioners Regulatory Authority (PPRA) and launched in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF) to advance research and knowledge development within the South African property sector.
The PSRC’s purpose is to generate evidence-based research that supports transformation, professionalism, skills development, and informed decision-making. During its launch, representatives from the property industry, academia, consumers, the private sector, government, and state-owned entities discussed the state of the sector and the PSRC’s mandate to drive economic growth, knowledge creation, and sector transformation.

Current Activities
The Research Centre’s primary role is to generate, analyse, and share credible data on the property market. This helps the PPRA and its stakeholders to identify trends, monitor transformation progress, and respond effectively to challenges in the sector. By grounding its regulatory and policy work in solid research, the PPRA ensures that interventions are both impactful and sustainable.
In line with Section 22(4) of the Property Practitioners Act (PPA), the PPRA is mandated to collaborate with the NRF on targeted research promoting transformation, inclusivity, and professionalisation. Key focus areas include barriers to entry, demographic representation, discriminatory practices, compliance and enforcement mechanisms, and the sector’s role in economic and spatial transformation. The PSRC serves as a collaborative platform for the PPRA, academic institutions, researchers, and industry stakeholders to identify sector challenges and develop research that supports the growth and transformation of the property industry.
